Class Descriptions
Modern Dance Technique: (Erick Hawkins based)
Taught by: Valerie Green and Kristin Licata
This technique class highlights movement following the logic of the body’s innate spirals and bone rhythms. The class starts with a series of floor exercises designed to awaken the feet, spine, center and pelvis. Standing center work focuses on proper alignment to support technical exercises that strengthen and train the body to execute healthy, organized, and clear movement. The class culminates in rhythmical, full-bodied across the floor movement combinations that incorporate the use of turns, jumps, working in and out of the floor, detailed gestures, and diverse dynamics. Dancers gain the ability to move quickly with efficient ease, as well as move slow with a strong intent. Additionally we work on developing expressive movement with a dramatic purpose, connecting an inner emotional state through physicality.
Choreography: Inspiration to Create Outside the Box
Taught by: Valerie Green
This workshop shares valuable creative movement exercises and tools that stimulate the mind and body to generate movement ideas outside ones regular tendencies and consciousness. The artists will be in a nurturing environment where they will be guided to further discover, develop and shape their own unique movement conceptions.
Performance in Action:
Taught by: Valerie Green
Over the course of the week Valerie Green will direct and shape a short work pulling together the week’s phrases, explorations, and choreographic studies. This workshop allows the opportunity for intensive participants to put new skills learned over the course of the week into action while working on performance quality. This work will be performed in the intensive final showing.
Ballet for Modern Dancers:
Taught by: Kristin Licata
This class will allow modern dancers to explore the principles of ballet in a non-threatening environment while translating how the forms study can enhance and support modern dance technique.
Gyrokinesis®
Taught by: Jen Painter
This class consists of fluid, circular movements designed to mobilize the spine and joints, release and strengthen the entire body, and connect students to their center. Breath work is emphasized to connect the movement sequences in a harmonious way.
